How to Be Your Own Role Model

Leo Manzione

Bill Gates. Oprah. Mike Adenuga. Elon Musk. Marie Forleo.

It probably goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyways – all of these individuals are extremely impressive business leaders who have impacted our society, our wallets, and even helped shape our definitions of success in business.

So who better, you may ask, to emulate on your own business journey? The value they’ve created for so many is undeniable – and isn’t that what business is all about? Providing value to those who want/need it?

While these people have done amazing jobs delivering value, that’s where my agreement stops. Because as successful as they may be, these people are not your best role model.

Rather, YOU are your best role model. Check out the video below to learn why.

We can’t just copy and paste someone else’s journey and expect the same results.

Fortunately, there are only a couple required steps to transform yourself into your best role model:

Step 1: Understand why you can’t copy anyone else’s journey

There is a lot we can learn from those who came before us. I hate to see business owners stuck reinventing the wheel because they didn’t open their eyes and minds to the success stories around them. There is so much we can learn from others.

That being said, we can’t just copy and paste someone else’s journey and expect the same results. The mere fact that this other person is done with their journey (or at least further along) means that they started at a different time.

While many business principles have been proven to stand the test of time, the actual tactics to execute the principles change constantly. What worked for one person at one time, won’t necessarily work for you today.

You are also a different person with different talents and abilities than the role model in question. You will need to play to your strengths and shore up your weaknesses in a way that is completely unique to you.

With this in mind, we can proceed to step 2.

Step 2: Look to your future self

The only person who has the same exact journey as you, is your future self.

Let that sink in for a moment because it might sound confusing at first:

The only person who has the same exact journey as you, is your future self.

This irrefutable truth is precisely why YOU are your best role model.

So how can we channel our future selves if we don’t really know who they are, where they are, or what they’ve created?

The simple answer is that we can’t. While the vision you have of your future self will get more clear over time, it’s essential to have at least some understanding of what you’re working towards and who you’d like to become.

Once you have that, work backwards:

  1. Where does your future self end up? What is the finish line? (Describe this in great detail.)
  2. How did your future self get there, step-by-step?

Answering these powerful questions will help guide you from who you are today to who you want to be in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, etc.
